In business, we often hear that experience is everything. Resumes are meticulously combed for years of relevant work, impressive titles, and specific industry knowledge. And while experience certainly has its place, I’ve found that some of my most valuable team members – and the greatest successes across my businesses – didn’t come with a lengthy list of past accomplishments.
My secret? I look for the spark.
The Limitations of the “Perfect” Resume
A resume tells you what someone has done, but it rarely tells you what they can do. It doesn’t capture their hunger, their resilience, or their sheer willingness to learn. I’ve met countless individuals with impressive credentials who lacked the passion to truly excel, and just as many without traditional experience who radiated an incredible drive to succeed.
For me, building a strong team isn’t just about filling a role; it’s about investing in people. It’s about creating an environment where talent can be cultivated, even if it’s currently untapped.
What I Really Look For When Hiring
When I’m interviewing, I’m certainly interested in skills, but I’m truly focused on identifying a few key traits that aren’t typically listed on a CV:
- Undeniable Drive: Do they have a palpable eagerness to contribute, to learn, and to grow? Is there a fire in their belly that says, “I want to do this, and I’m going to master it”?
- Genuine Passion: Not just for the job itself, but for connecting with people, solving problems, or simply being part of something bigger. If you want to deliver the “Sudsies Smile,” you have to genuinely enjoy making people happy.
- Coachability & Curiosity: Are they open to feedback? Do they ask thoughtful questions? A curious mind is a learning mind, and that’s invaluable.
- Attitude is Everything: A positive, can-do attitude can overcome a multitude of skill gaps. Someone who is enthusiastic, adaptable, and a team player can transform a workplace.
These are the qualities that tell me someone will not only absorb training but will also actively seek out ways to improve and contribute.
Our Commitment to Cultivating Talent
When we bring someone on board who has that spark but limited experience, we don’t just throw them in the deep end. We embrace the responsibility of training them.
This commitment is built into our culture:
- Mentorship: Experienced team members act as mentors, guiding new hires through the nuances of their roles.
- Structured Training: We provide the tools and knowledge, whether it’s through hands-on training for garment care, intricate rug cleaning techniques, or the customer service principles we embody.
- Patience & Support: We understand there’s a learning curve. We create a supportive environment where questions are encouraged and mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth, not failure.
I can think of countless examples across my businesses where someone started with little to no relevant background, but with immense drive and a willingness to learn. They embraced the training, absorbed feedback, and quickly became indispensable parts of our team. These individuals often become our most loyal and dedicated employees because they know we believed in them when others might not have. And the best part?
They are part of our Sudsies family for years and decades.
They prove that investing in raw potential isn’t just a feel-good philosophy; it’s a sound business strategy. It builds a stronger, more resilient team, fosters a culture of continuous improvement, and ultimately leads to exceptional service and a better customer experience.
